There is an artificial lake in our village.

Posted on June 13, 2026 By aga No Comments on There is an artificial lake in our village.

I thought I’d stumbled on a silent massacre.

At first glance, it looked like something out of a science-fiction movie.

Dozens of pale, perfectly rounded shapes lay scattered across the shallow water near the edge of the lake.

They were clustered together in strange formations, partially buried beneath a thin layer of silt.

Motionless.

Silent.

Unsettling.

My heart immediately began to race.

The longer I stared, the stranger they seemed.

From where I stood, they looked exactly like eggs.

Not bird eggs.

Not anything familiar.

Something larger.

Something mysterious.

Something that didn’t belong.

For a moment, I simply stood there frozen.

The water was unusually clear that morning.

Sunlight filtered through the surface, illuminating the pale objects resting on the lakebed.

Every detail seemed unnaturally sharp.

The scene felt staged.

Almost deliberate.

As if some hidden creature had emerged during the night, laid dozens of eggs, and vanished without leaving a trace.

The silence only made everything feel more eerie.

There were no boats.

No fishermen.

No children playing nearby.

Even the usual sounds of birds seemed distant.

The entire shoreline felt suspended in stillness.

I took a cautious step closer.

Then another.

The cluster remained unchanged.

Perfectly still.

Perfectly silent.

My imagination immediately went to work.

What if they were the eggs of some rare amphibian?

Or an invasive species nobody had noticed yet?

Perhaps a large turtle had chosen this lake as a nesting ground.

Maybe they belonged to a creature I couldn’t even identify.

The possibilities became increasingly ridiculous.

Yet none of them felt impossible in that moment.

The human mind has a remarkable ability to transform uncertainty into mystery.

And standing beside that lake, mystery was exactly what I saw.

The lake itself added to the atmosphere.

It wasn’t a natural body of water.

Years earlier, it had been created artificially near the center of our small village.

A carefully designed reservoir surrounded by walking paths and trees.

Beautiful.

Peaceful.

Yet somehow slightly uncanny.

Like a mirror dropped into the landscape.

On most days, it felt calm and inviting.

That day, however, it felt different.

Almost secretive.

As though it was hiding something beneath its glass-like surface.

I crouched near the shore and studied the strange objects more carefully.

There had to be dozens of them.

Maybe more.

Each one appeared nearly identical in size.

Round.

Pale.

Smooth.

Arranged in shallow depressions formed by years of water movement.

The patterns seemed almost intentional.

That only fueled my curiosity further.

I began constructing increasingly elaborate explanations.

Perhaps they were part of an undiscovered breeding site.

Perhaps local wildlife experts would be interested.

Perhaps I had accidentally found something genuinely unusual.

For several minutes, I simply watched them.

Waiting.

Expecting movement.

Expecting some clue.

A ripple.

A crack.

A sign of life.

Nothing happened.

The objects remained exactly as they were.

The longer I observed them, the more fascinated I became.

Fear slowly transformed into curiosity.

Curiosity became obsession.

I even considered taking photographs and posting them online to ask for identification.

Surely someone would know what they were.

But before reaching for my phone, I decided to move closer.

Just a little closer.

Carefully balancing near the edge of the water, I leaned forward and focused on one of the nearest objects.

That’s when I noticed something unexpected.

A faint marking.

Barely visible beneath the mud and algae.

I squinted.

Shifted my angle.

Looked again.

There it was.

A logo.

A small, unmistakable logo.

For a second, my brain refused to process what I was seeing.

Then realization hit.

And I immediately burst out laughing.

Not eggs.

Not amphibians.

Not alien organisms.

Not mysterious lake creatures.

Golf balls.

They were golf balls.

Dozens and dozens of ordinary golf balls.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Over time, they had accumulated in the lake from the nearby golf course.

Bad shots.

Missed swings.

Errant drives.

Years of frustrated golfers had unknowingly contributed to what looked like a bizarre underwater nesting ground.

The water currents had slowly gathered them into clusters.

Sediment had partially buried them.

Nature had disguised them just enough to fool an overactive imagination.

Standing there, I couldn’t stop laughing at myself.

A few minutes earlier, I had convinced myself I might be witnessing some rare biological phenomenon.

Now I was staring at evidence of mediocre golf.

The transformation from mystery to mundanity felt almost disappointing.

Yet strangely comforting at the same time.

Because the experience revealed something interesting.

The world doesn’t always need monsters to feel mysterious.

Sometimes uncertainty alone is enough.

Our minds naturally rush to fill gaps in knowledge.

We invent stories.

Create explanations.

Build entire narratives from incomplete information.

Most of the time, reality turns out to be far simpler.

Far less dramatic.

Yet somehow equally fascinating.

As I walked away from the lake, I glanced back one final time.

The clusters still looked mysterious from a distance.

Still looked strange.

Still looked like something extraordinary.

Only now I knew the truth.

The monsters existed only in my imagination.

The mystery existed only because I didn’t yet have all the information.

And perhaps that’s one of the most comforting lessons nature occasionally offers.

Sometimes the world isn’t hiding creatures.

Sometimes it isn’t hiding miracles.

Sometimes it isn’t hiding danger at all.

Sometimes it’s simply reminding us how easily we mistake the ordinary for the extraordinary when our imagination gets there first.

And somewhere nearby, without realizing it, a golfer was probably preparing to add another “mysterious egg” to the collection.
