She Tried to Scam Me With a $150 Lobster on Our First Date, But One Detail Exposed Everything

I felt like I had a good grip on people at thirty-two.

nor flawless, nor impervious to errors, but knowledgeable enough to steer clear of clear pitfalls. I had experienced relationships, witnessed the gradual disintegration of once-solid things, and persuaded myself that I had mastered the art of reading between the lines.

Nevertheless, I was trapped in a boring routine when my previous relationship discreetly ended. Home. Work. shows that are mindless. Messages from pals who were gradually disappearing into marriages, children, and lifestyles that were too busy for late-night chats.

It didn’t hurt. Simply empty.

After months of witnessing this gradual fade-out, my sister Erin finally lost it.

One evening, she threw my phone onto the table in front of me and screamed, “You’re wasting yourself.” “Download the applications. Get to know someone. Try, at least.

So we did. As we swiped through profiles, we made snap decisions as if we had the right to do so. At first, it seemed absurd, almost like a game. However, it eventually ceased to feel forced.

Chloe and I then matched.

Unlike the others, she didn’t fit in. She had a strong personality; she was self-assured, a little combative, and seemed to love putting people to the test.

It was clear from her first communication.

“Midlife crisis or big fish?”

I grinned as I looked at my profile photo, which showed me clutching a fish like a prize.

“Why not both?” I answered.

That was sufficient to start the process.

We spoke nonstop for the next few days. The discussion flowed naturally; it was lighthearted, rapid, and a little daring. She challenged things, pushed back, and kept things interesting rather than just responding.

Then she proposed that we get together.

She said, “Let’s do something special.” “No dull coffee dates.”

I paused at that. I had lived long enough to understand that being “special” occasionally entailed unstated expectations. Confusion and guessing games didn’t appeal to me.

I therefore stated it straight.

“On first dates, I usually split the bill.” simply keeps things straightforward.

She responded right away.

“That’s reasonable.”

tidy. Simple. There is no doubt.

Or so it appeared.

She picked the upscale downtown seafood restaurant. The kind of restaurant where everything seems meticulously chosen, from the subdued lighting to the thoughtfully designed menu that subtly conceals pricing just enough to make you uncomfortable.

I arrived early. sat down at the bar. Every few seconds, I checked the door while pretending to look at the wine list.

Without barely looking up, the bartender asked, “First date?”

“That clear?”

“In a minute, you checked your phone six times.”

I heard my name before I could reply.

“Evan?”

She was there when I turned.

She resembled her photos exactly, but with a more polished appearance. She had a red dress, a self-assured stance, and a presence that attracted attention without her having to try.

I got up a bit too quickly and said, “Hey.”

With a smile, she put her arm through mine as if we were already acquainted. “Excellent location selection.”

I said, “You picked it.”

“Exactly.”

After we sat down, everything seemed simple for a moment. The jokes landed, the discussion flowed, and there was that first spark that gives you hope that this won’t be a waste of time.

The waitress then arrived.

Chloe hardly looked at the menu.

She declared, “I’ll have the lobster.” “More butter.”

Without hesitation. No conversation.

I stuck to salmon.

The discussion went on, although there was a slight change in tone. She began snapping photos of the meal, the table, and even us. It was as if she was recording the evening instead of experiencing it.

I dismissed it nonetheless. Perhaps that was just the way she was.

Then the bill showed up.

It was weighty and silent as it sat between us.

I looked at it. Just her lobster cost $150. Her side of the table was far from mine in terms of everything else.

No issue, I reasoned. We concurred.

I took my card out.

“You mean we’ll split it?”

She leaned back and grinned as if I had just cracked a joke.

“I refuse to pay.”

I gave a blink. “What do you mean?”

“You’re the man,” she remarked nonchalantly. “Men are the ones who pay.”

It was there. The change. The exam.

It’s possible that the previous version of myself would have folded there, paid, avoided the conflict, and left silently but irritated.

But not right now.

“We agreed,” I answered, maintaining a steady tone.

She looked at her phone and shrugged. “I didn’t believe you were sincere.”

We could feel a change in the air around us. heavier and quieter. As if many in the vicinity were beginning to take notice.

She said, “Are you really going to make this awkward?”

“No,” I replied. “I’m not. I’m only adhering to our agreement.

She rolled her eyes. “It’s embarrassing.”

“No,” I replied coolly. “It isn’t.”

Maya, the waitress, came back at that moment, obviously sensing the tension.

“Is everything alright here?”

I didn’t think twice.

“We decided to part ways. She is declining.

Chloe let out a sigh, as if she had been annoyed. He’s exaggerating. It’s common for men to pay.

After giving her a brief glance, Maya said something that completely altered the situation.

She said, “Weren’t you here recently?” The same table. A different man?

Chloe froze.

“I wasn’t that person.”

Maya remained unflinching. At that time, you also ordered lobster. The measure has the same problem.

Like a fallen glass, silence fell on the table.

This was no longer weird.

Exposure was what this was.

Chloe’s self-assurance gave up just enough for her to notice. “You’re not correct.”

“I’m not,” Maya stated calmly. “Do you want different checks?”

That was all.

“Yes,” I said.

Chloe lost her cool. Her actions became more deliberate as she began rummaging through her purse.

She whispered, “You didn’t have to make a scene out of this.”

“I didn’t,” I answered. “You did.”

The checks arrived. I made my payment right away.

She gave her card.

declined.

Her expression instantly changed. Quiet terror took the place of controlled confidence. She made an unsuccessful attempt to giggle as she scrambled for another card.

The second card was successful.

However, it was no longer relevant.

At the table, whatever vision she had attempted to create fell apart.

Without glancing at me, she picked up her belongings and walked away.

I let it settle for a while as I sat there.

Maya nodded slightly at me. “Don’t let dating be ruined by this.”

I said, “I won’t.”

The air felt clearer but colder outside.

I drove to Erin’s residence rather than home.

Already grinning, she opened the door. “All right?”

I chuckled. “You were correct to eject me. You won’t believe this, though.

After ten minutes, I was in her kitchen, telling her everything while eating ice cream right out of the container.

“Did she really try that?” Erin shook her head.

“Seemingly more than once,” I remarked. “She was recognized by the waitress.”

Erin leaned back and turned to face me. “You didn’t pay, correct?”

“No.”

She grinned. “Excellent.”

I was unprepared for that.

“Why is it good?”

She said, “Because you didn’t fold.” “You paid attention to what was directly in front of you.”

For a moment, I sat with that.

She was correct.

It had nothing to do with the money. Not at all.

It was about not dismissing warning signs in order to maintain order. not shrinking in order to stay out of trouble. not acting as though something is okay when it’s obviously not.

I didn’t leave a date feeling exhausted for the first time in a long time.

I felt stable.

As if I had drew a line and held it.

And that turns out to be far more valuable than any expensive supper.
