Renee Good’s family sues the Trump administration following fatal ICE shooting

A mother of three is dead, and her family is taking its fight to federal court. Nearly nine months after Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis, two lawsuits are bringing her death back into the national spotlight. Now, her brother says the family will keep demanding answers and fighting for meaningful public accountability. The filings place the events of January 7, 2026, back under intense scrutiny while asking a federal court to examine allegations surrounding the shooting and the conduct of federal officials. Attorneys for Renee Nicole Good’s family announced two federal civil lawsuits on October 1, alleging wrongful death and excessive force. Good, 37, was killed on January 7 near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue, just blocks from where George Floyd was murdered. She was shot during an encounter with ICE agents conducting an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis. The lawsuits allege that the force used against her was unlawful, but those allegations remain claims presented to the court rather than judicial findings. ([FOX 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul][2])

One case seeks to hold the United States responsible under the Federal Tort Claims Act. The other names ICE officer Jonathan Ross, who fired the shots, along with other federal officials. According to the complaints, the second lawsuit also raises broader civil-rights allegations concerning the federal operation in Minnesota. The defendants have not been found liable through these filings, and the legal process will determine which allegations, if any, are supported by admissible evidence. ([rblaw.net][3])

Good’s brother, Brent Ganger, has described the family’s decision to pursue the lawsuits as a responsibility to his sister, her three children, and the wider public. The filings seek damages and accountability while placing the circumstances of Good’s death before the federal courts. For the family, the lawsuits also represent an opportunity to obtain evidence and answers that they say have remained unresolved since the shooting. As the cases move forward, testimony, records, video evidence, and other material could become part of the public legal record and help clarify disputed details surrounding that January morning.
