# **Southern Honey Mustard Lil Smokies Everyone Will Keep Coming Back For**

The moment Aunt Denise places these on the table, people start saying, “I’m only having one,” but somehow they always end up reaching for another…and another. These Southern Honey Mustard Lil Smokies are one of those irresistible appetizers that disappear almost as quickly as they’re served. Coated in a rich glaze that’s sweet, tangy, and just a little savory, every bite is packed with flavor. As they bake, the sauce thickens into a sticky caramelized coating that clings perfectly to each little sausage, making them impossible to resist.

One of the reasons I love this recipe is because it’s incredibly simple to prepare. It uses everyday pantry ingredients, requires only a few minutes of prep, and lets the oven handle the rest of the work. Whether you’re hosting a family gathering, church supper, holiday party, football watch party, or neighborhood potluck, these little smokies always earn rave reviews. They’re the kind of classic comfort food that never goes out of style.

Bake them in a disposable aluminum pan for easy cleanup, then serve them directly from the pan with plenty of toothpicks or cocktail forks. They pair beautifully with cheese trays, fresh vegetables, crackers, dips, or even slider buns for mini sandwiches. Best of all, they travel well, making them perfect for taking to parties or family gatherings where everyone can help themselves.

## **Southern Honey Mustard Lil Smokies**

**Servings:** 10–12 (Appetizer)

### **Ingredients**

* 2 packages (14 ounces each) cocktail sausages (Lil Smokies), about 2 pounds total
* ½ cup honey
* ⅓ cup yellow mustard
* ¼ cup Dijon mustard
* ¼ cup packed brown sugar
* 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
* 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
* 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (or regular paprika)
* ½ teaspoon garlic powder
* ½ teaspoon onion powder
* ¼ teaspoon black pepper
* ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for extra heat)
* Nonstick cooking spray

## **Instructions**

Preheat your oven to **375°F (190°C)**. Lightly spray a disposable aluminum baking pan with nonstick cooking spray and place it on a baking sheet to make transferring it easier.

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the honey, yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper if you’re using it. Continue whisking until the sugar is mostly dissolved and the mixture becomes smooth.

Spread the cocktail sausages evenly inside the prepared baking pan. Pour the honey mustard sauce over the sausages, scraping the bowl so none of the flavorful glaze is wasted.

Gently stir everything together until every sausage is evenly coated. Arrange them into a single layer whenever possible so they brown evenly while baking.

Bake for **25 to 30 minutes**, stirring once about halfway through the cooking time. The sausages should be fully heated, and the sauce should begin bubbling and thickening.

Once baked, switch the oven to **broil on high** for **2 to 4 minutes**. Watch carefully during this step, as the sugars can burn quickly. The goal is to lightly caramelize the edges of the sausages while creating a glossy, sticky glaze.

Remove the pan from the oven and allow the little smokies to rest for about **5 to 10 minutes**. As they cool slightly, the sauce will continue thickening into a rich coating that sticks perfectly to each sausage.

Serve warm directly from the baking pan with toothpicks, cocktail forks, or a serving spoon. Don’t be surprised when everyone keeps returning for “just one more” until the pan is completely empty.

## **Variations and Helpful Tips**

If you enjoy a little extra spice, increase the cayenne pepper to ½ teaspoon or stir in a few dashes of your favorite hot sauce. For a deeper smoky flavor, substitute spicy brown mustard for the yellow mustard and add a few drops of liquid smoke.

These little smokies can also be prepared in a slow cooker. Simply whisk the sauce together as directed, pour it over the sausages, and cook on **LOW for 2 to 3 hours**, stirring once or twice. During the final 30 minutes, leave the lid slightly open to allow the sauce to reduce and thicken.

For a lighter option, substitute turkey cocktail sausages instead of traditional pork or beef versions. Right before serving, garnish with chopped parsley or sliced green onions to add freshness and color.

If you’re preparing food for a large gathering, simply double the recipe. Divide it between two baking pans, keeping one warm in the kitchen while the first disappears. It’s an easy way to make sure there’s always another batch ready when guests inevitably come back for seconds.
