Eric Dane, the beloved actor known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has passed away at the age of 53 after battling ALS.

Dane, who was diagnosed with ALS—also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease—last year, died on Thursday, February 19, according to a statement released by his family.

He rose to worldwide fame for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan, famously nicknamed “McSteamy,” on the hit television series Grey’s Anatomy. His charm, confidence, and emotional depth made the character one of the show’s most memorable figures.

In a statement shared with People Magazine, his family said:

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

They added that throughout his illness, Dane became a passionate advocate for ALS awareness and research. Determined to help others facing the same diagnosis, he used his voice to bring attention to the disease.

“He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and was forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he received. The family asks for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

A Life Marked by Both Hardship and Success

Born on November 9, 1972, in San Francisco, Eric Dane endured a difficult childhood. His father died from a gunshot wound when Eric was just seven years old. Years later, he reflected that he did not fully understand the emotional impact of that tragedy until he became a parent himself.

Dane discovered acting unexpectedly. A high school water polo player, he took part in a production of All My Sons during the off-season. That experience changed his life. In a 2014 interview, he said he “fell in love” with acting at that moment.

After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream. Early television appearances included roles in The Wonder Years, Saved by the Bell, Roseanne, and Married… with Children. His first recurring role came in Gideon’s Crossing.

In 2009, he made his feature film debut in The Basket.

The Role That Changed Everything

In 2006, Dane joined Grey’s Anatomy during its second season as Mark Sloan. Originally intended to be a short-term character, fan enthusiasm quickly turned the role into a permanent one.

Beyond his strong acting performance, audiences were captivated by his character’s charm and attractiveness, turning Dane into a television heartthrob. His character remained on the show until 2012, when Mark Sloan was written off in an emotional storyline.

Reflecting on his portrayal, Dane once said he felt an “artistic obligation” to embrace the character’s sensual side rather than shy away from it. He acknowledged that parts of himself were reflected in the role, but ultimately, he believed in giving audiences what they connected with most.

A New Generation of Fans

In 2019, Dane found renewed popularity with younger audiences after joining the cast of the hit HBO series Euphoria. His performance introduced him to a new generation of viewers and reaffirmed his versatility as an actor.

In April of last year, he publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis. At the time, he expressed gratitude for the support of his family, saying he was thankful to have them by his side as he faced the difficult road ahead.

He spoke openly about the disease, calling it “nasty” and describing the physical challenges it brought. He was even forced to miss a Grey’s Anatomy reunion at the Emmy Awards after suffering a fall that required hospitalization.

His First Symptoms

In June, during an appearance on Good Morning America, Dane shared how his symptoms began. He initially noticed weakness in his right hand but assumed it was minor fatigue. As the weakness worsened, he sought medical attention, eventually being referred to multiple specialists before receiving his ALS diagnosis.

Despite the devastating news, Dane continued speaking publicly about the disease and advocating for research and awareness.

A Lasting Legacy

Eric Dane is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14.

He leaves behind a powerful legacy—not only as a talented actor who brought unforgettable characters to life, but also as a father, husband, and advocate who faced his illness with courage and grace.

Rest in peace, Eric Dane. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and fans around the world.
