Store worker who interacted with the 16 children rescued from Ohio home says one detail will never leave her

A Dollar General employee in the small village of Hamden, Ohio has stepped forward to share troubling memories of the family now at the center of one of the most disturbing child neglect investigations the state has seen in years. Long before authorities uncovered the shocking conditions inside the family’s home, the employee noticed signs that something wasn’t right. At the time, however, she never imagined the truth would be as horrifying as it ultimately proved to be.

Ariel Gutierrez worked evening shifts at the local Dollar General, a store that served as a regular stop for many residents. Among those familiar faces was the Siders family, who developed a routine that employees quickly came to recognize. They almost always arrived late at night, often just minutes before the store was scheduled to close. Their visits were frequent enough that workers could predict when they might walk through the doors.

According to Gutierrez, the family rarely browsed the aisles or spent much time shopping. Instead, they purchased the same basic household supplies over and over again. Water, vegetable oil, sugar, and a handful of inexpensive necessities made up most of their purchases. The routine hardly changed from one visit to the next, and while nothing about the shopping list itself seemed unusual, it was the family’s behavior that gradually caught employees’ attention.

One detail stood out every single time they visited.

Although investigators later discovered there were 16 children living inside the home, the family typically brought only one child with them during these late-night shopping trips. The child stayed close to the adults at all times and never wandered away from their side. Employees noticed that the adults seemed determined to keep the child from interacting with anyone else in the store.

Gutierrez recalled that the children she encountered appeared noticeably different from other kids their age. They looked painfully thin, almost fragile, as if they had gone far too long without proper nutrition. Their skin was unusually pale, lacking the healthy color most children naturally have. Their appearance immediately raised concern among employees who saw them repeatedly over the months.

What disturbed Gutierrez even more was the way the children carried themselves.

Their hair hung over their faces, almost completely hiding their expressions. She said it looked as though they were trying to disappear from the world around them or had been taught to avoid eye contact with strangers. They rarely lifted their heads, and they never appeared relaxed or comfortable inside the store.

“They were ghost white,” Gutierrez said while describing the children she remembered. “They didn’t have any weight on their bodies, and they kept their hair over their faces, almost like they were blocking out the outside world so they wouldn’t have to see anyone.”

The image has remained with her ever since.

She explained that every visit followed nearly the same pattern. The adults did the talking while the child remained silent. There were no smiles, no curiosity about the toys or snacks lining the shelves, and none of the excitement that most children show during a trip to the store. Instead, there was only quiet obedience and an overwhelming sense that something was terribly wrong.

As time went on, employees became increasingly concerned.

The workers discussed the family’s appearance among themselves and wondered whether there was anything they could do to help. Even without knowing the full story, they believed the children needed kindness wherever they could find it.

On several occasions, store employees tried to offer assistance.

They donated clothing, hygiene products, and other basic necessities, hoping the family might accept the help and that the children would benefit from it. The gestures came from genuine concern rather than judgment. Employees simply wanted to provide something that might improve the children’s daily lives.

According to Gutierrez, however, they never saw any evidence that the donated items were actually being used.

Despite their efforts, nothing seemed to change. Each time the family returned, the children looked much the same as before—frail, withdrawn, and hidden behind long hair that covered much of their faces.

Another detail from those encounters has never left Gutierrez’s memory.

She said there was an overpowering odor that accompanied the family every time they entered the building. The smell was so strong that employees immediately recognized when the family had arrived, even before seeing them.

“It will never leave my mind,” she said.

According to Gutierrez, the odor lingered long after the family walked back out the doors. She explained that even several minutes after they had left, the smell remained inside the store, clinging to the air and reminding employees that they had been there.

“It was like they could have left the store five minutes earlier, and you could still smell it,” she recalled.

Her description closely matched what Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson later revealed after visiting the family’s home during the investigation.

Wilson said the conditions inside the residence were unlike anything he had experienced during his career. Among all the disturbing scenes investigators encountered, he admitted the smell was one of the most unforgettable aspects of the case.

According to Wilson, it was something he knew he would carry with him for the rest of his life, describing the conditions inside the home as deeply disturbing and difficult to put into words.

As more information emerged, the case sent shockwaves throughout Hamden, a quiet village with fewer than 1,000 residents. Many people struggled to understand how such severe neglect could have remained hidden for so long without anyone realizing the full extent of what was happening behind closed doors.
